MMR Vaccinations

About Measles, Mumps and Rubella

Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German Measles) are all serious illnesses in their own right.  These illnesses are infectious and can easily be spread between unvaccinated children and adults. Measles can cause serious problems for pregnant women, loss of hearing and in some cases can lead to contracting meningitis.  Contracting Mumps will cause painful, swollen glands around the neck.  German Measles will cause an unpleasant fever and a red rash over the body.

The Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccinations are combined into one vaccine called MMR.

It is important to check you have had both vaccination doses if you:-

  • are about to start college or university
  • are going to travel abroad
  • are planning a pregnancy
  • are a frontline health or social care worker
  • were born between 1970 and 1979, as you may have only been vaccinated against measles
  • were born between 1980 and 1990, as you may not be protected against mumps
